Now features Ferrari!

I finally have a reason to pick up a next generation console. The GT series is, without a doubt, the best racing sim available. The only thing that is a big missing item in my book is damage. With damage, though, the AI is gonna have to get a lot smarter than it is.

GT is playstation. But it is the shiznit.

I'm waiting for Forza 2 on the 360 - that looks to be at least as graphically and feature rich as GT - and has damage. Hopefully it feels as good.
found a semi-official car & track list for Forza

See? No one really needs a PS3 until then. Everything else out right now is either crap or looks as good if not better on the 360 at 720p.

In Spring '07, the Formula 1 season will be starting again. I won't be bothering with new racing games until next winter.

Just as well. MGS4 and some other, hopefully, killer apps will be along at that time as well.

Not bothering with racing games; is that because you have to have a separate subscription to watch the F1 stuff on sat/cable or what?

No, watching the professionals do it is much more fun than playing. The Speed channel is part of pretty much any DirecTV package.

Plus, I have a reasonable track car, so I can go and play with fire instead.

Yeah, MGS4 is the main reason I want a PS3, but I'm not going to get one until next year sometime. I just can't justify spending that much money on a system that doesn't have many games that I'm interested in at the moment.

I will definitely get GT4 though.

We have extended basic... so no speed channel for me.

Hey, you're welcome to bring that Subaru down to Albuquerque and play on the track with us, so don't give me that squint...

HD trailers are up.

The sound and picture is amazing. If only I had an HDTV, or wasn't blind enough to not be able to tell the difference from my couch...

Unless there are spectacular crashes with gigantic explosions, I'm not interested.

I know, I know... realism and all that... but dammit it's a videogame.

Oh! Better yet! If they add a fighting option like Road Rage where you can hit fellow racers with a bat!

If I could afford it I would. With Pueblo only 3 hours away (towing a trailer) I'd be all over it if I could. I'm probably about 2-3 years out of being able to race. Money, I need to make more, and car, I would prefer a dedicated "play" car, are holding me back right now.

Though I could probably start learning if I can stiffen up the suby's suspension a bit.

You can go out to play on the track without having to race ;)

There's a CSP training track in Golden that the Z car club of Colorado runs on every so often.

I know, tracks are typically open.

A track in Golden? I didn't think that any were left around Denver...

[edit]Ah, highway patrol training... neat. I found a description through a Ferarri club page. Looks interesting.

No videogame has ever disappointed me as much as Gran Turismo. I heard soo, so much hype about it, and I sat down to play when I was like 12, and I was never more bored in my entire life. It should come with a warning that it is only for people who want to drive cars they will never own, and not for people who want to play a fun game.

I dunno, I derive a certain amount of enjoyment from driving cars that I will never be able to afford, so to me, it is a fun game.

Also, Alex, you say you played that when you were 12? How old are you now? I don't know about you, but I certainly learned to appreciate lots of things as I grew older that I simply couldn't when I was 12 (though I wouldn't particularly expect this game to be one of them, but still)...

Ditto, I even get enjoyment from driving the cars I could afford in that game. I don't have a second car, and my primary car is a Honda CR-V. I don't keep a car at school. I love to drive and driving sims remind me what it is like.

Oh yeah, I totally agree, I'm sure it's incredibly awesome for car people, I just don't think it's one of those mass appeal games. But maybe I should give it another shot anyway. Maybe I'll pick up one of the later ones for my ps2.

Enter Burnout 4

Closest thing to fighting in a racing game with "Road Rage" mode.

God damn it.

Oh well. The GT series has always been a "killer app" for me. It doesn't hurt, though, that I've always waited a couple years after the console release to buy it.

I was a little teary eyed when I knew that I probably wouldn't own another GT game, but now I'm starting to come to terms with it since Forza looks to be all that.

But one thing that made GT & GT2 so damn special was that crop of older cars... that old 60hp Subaru kicked ass!

Meh, in a few years PS3s will be as cheap as current PS2s or if worse comes to worse Sony will go the way of Sega, and we'll see GT on XBox.
