Reading through a bunch of stuff, I have realized what is wrong with Dashboard. As it is now, it still suffers from the same problem as Konfabulator; too much at once. Even with the Expose-like feature, it doesn't make sense to have all the widgets shown at once. If they are planning for developers to make application specific widgets, then there needs to be two Dashboards, one for general crap, and one for application specific widgets. Either 2 different commands to bring up one or the other, or hitting F12 once brings up widgets associated with the front most application, and hitting F12 again brings up the general widgets. That is all.

I'm of the impression that Dashboard is just system resource intensive bloat.

I'd rather get a Finder that works right with Tiger than some useless bling bling.

I don't need another clock. I don't need another calculator. I don't need a weather widget. I need a Finder that updates even when it's in the background and one that doesn't forget its keyboard shortcuts when it suits it.

I'll ditto WB, but I also don't have a bad updating / refresh problem. Occasionally something lags, but that is rare.

Earlier this morning, I pressed Cmd-Shift-N in the Finder repeatedly and nothing happened. That annoys me. It happens often. Also happens a bit with Cmd-D. Yet, the commands work if they are selected from the dropdowns up top.

Re: updating: Try to distill a .ps file on the desktop and keep distiller in the front, but be sure to keep the spot where the pdf would appear visible in the background. When Distiller finishes, count the time until the pdf appears being sure to keep Distiller in the front. It'll be a while if it does ever appear.

I've found that to be true under OS9 as well - for some reason PDF files run through distiller could take ages to show up.

I'm not so sure that is an OS X issue.

You should try setting up watched folders for distiller and see if that improves things - export your ps files to a folder that Distiller is watching and it'll run every few minutes (you can define that time frame). I think I had much better success with getting PDFs to show up when using this method. I would even just put PS files in that folder, launch Distiller so it would run it, then quit distiller.

But yeah - PDF files can be frustrating like that...

The take Distiller out of the loop. Take any file in any program and Save As. Go ahead and wait for it to appear.

I don't have to...

Saving to a folder or to the desktop I don't wait more than 2-3 seconds for files to show up.

I wish mine were that reliable. My Finder windows do NOT update while in the background. At all.

This is especially frustrating when in list view, and I double click an item to open only to find that as soon as the Mac brings the Finder to the front the list is updated and moves the item I clicked and I then open the wrong file instead.

Seriously frustrating.

Seriously though. Try it again. Create something in Photoshop, press Tab to hide the palettes and then Save As to the Desktop. The file really appears on your Mac without first bringing the Finder to the front?

I'll have to test it out when I get home - I'm on WindersXtraPainful here at work.

I have noticed the shifting list view like you mention - for some reason when you save a file it'll create a duplicate that shifts the list for a second - almost like it creates a new file and deletes the old one... pretty annoying when you double click and get the wrong file.

OK - test complete.

Test file was a 400 x 100 px image in photoshop. Saved the file to the desktop, did nothing, file didn't show up after 10 seconds so I clicked on the desktop and it immediately appeared.

Did the test again, saved the file and immediately clicked on the desktop and the file was there.

So it is merely the refresh - I guess I never noticed cause I mostly will save a file to a folder and then import with another program... rarely do I go fishing for files I just created unless it is a PDF.

In which case - i just printed a file "test.ps" from Safari which immediately showed up on the desktop - ran it through distiller with the same effect as with the photoshop file. Desktop in the background didn't refresh, but file was there once I clicked on the desktop.

Did a save as on this page out of Safari and it appeared immediately in the background. Same thing happened saving a file out of SubEthaEdit.

So I think blame lays on Adobe...

hmmm... maybe it's a Carbon / Cocoa issue then. I just saved this page and it showed up.

Either way, it's really annoying and I'd rather Apple fix that than create Dashboard which undoubtedly require hundreds of Megs of RAM

Here is site that lists widgets that have already been made.

Oooh - that Bash widget would get a workout around here...
A couple others look good too - but just wait until X.4 is released - there is sure to be a boom of widgets since most of what is made not is just by people who have the dev-builds (of which I've been a good boy and resited...).

It's very tempting to actually make that a widget. Maybe smaller and in a corner. Or even animated.

I will quote the apple site:

Widgets are based on the Web Kit. Anyone who can weave HTML markup with CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) and JavaScript can write a Widget.

I don't think you would have a problem.

BTW - I have to say dashboard is kinda cool - it allows for keeping thos small items gathered that you normally wouldn't want to dedicate full time screen space to.

Me like.
I'm hesitant to try and do actual work in it though - so back into Panther for me...
