Huh, it seems to have deprecated support for the SCSI card on my server. My drives are now nowhere to be seen.

Sorry, they had to exclude the updated SCSI drivers, otherwise there wouldn't have been space for this much needed update:

Hm, they're back now, but I had to completely shut down the box and pull the power to get it to restart. I think the tower has reached its last hurrah.

Hell yeah. Dual 18GB 15K RPM Cheetahs in a striped array. Yeah, its a software raid but does very well to hold commonly used files, ie: all the web-served files and my subversion repositories on the server.

Dammit, the woes are not over. 10.5.6 has essentially bricked my MDD. Its completely unresponsive to anything but SSH, but even when SSH'd in nothing works. It looks like apache is going wild but killall doesn't do anything and the daemondo process just keeps restarting it (and restarting itself).

I can't even reboot the machine remotely.

Joy.

Dammit.
Whoami on the system tells me that I'm 501 instead of my username and there's no record of that user now in the passwd file or the sudoers file. I wonder if the damn thing is getting hacked?

Its now refusing anything over port 22.

My problem is the SCSI drives or card. They weren't able to be read at all. The finder would hang on reading it, the command line would hang on reading it, and since Apache was trying to serve from the drives it was hanging as well.

I finally got them to show up on a reboot (s'okay, though, their backups were up to date) and they're currently serving away just fine. They just need to last long enough for my new server to finish building so I can migrate away from the tower and to a laptop that will take significantly less power and make much less noise.

Are you saying it wasn't the update but something in the drives or SCSI card?
If so, you might try removing and reseating all the connectors and cables.

Apple has historically broken support for things with each update. 10.2 broke my PCI video card (which worked fine in 10.1 and 10.0), 10.3 broke my PCI SCSI card (which worked fine in 10.2 and 10.1 and 10.0), and 10.5 broke my iSub (which worked fine in 10.4 and 10.3 and 10.2) and my G4 (which worked fine with 10.4 and 10.3 and 10.2 and 10.1 and 10.0 and 9.2 and 9.1 and 9.0).

The only OS X Apple ever actually did a good job of releasing was 10.4. It didn't break anything that wasn't already broken.

This issue coincides with the update, so I can only wonder if the update doesn't like my SCSI Card or the Software Raid in which they're configured. I'm not too terribly worried, though, just so long as my backups still run, 'cause hopefully this machine will be retired by this weekend.

Oh and in 10.5.5 apple broke open GL support for people with G5s and x1900 cards. Made it so all video played through quicktime was purple and green. I am hoping that is fixed now,
